The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position each in the area of (1) environmental engineering including environmental chemistry, chemical treatment processes, energy and environmental materials, environmental application of GIS and big data, and other environmental engineering-related studies; and (2) Construction IT including mechanical design and control of robot, computer vision (visual signal processing for robot), machine learning, AI-based environment perception and recognition, field robotics, and other relevant areas to construction robotics.
The selected candidate will be expected to teach courses in the field of (1) environmental science and engineering and (2) construction IT and robotics, respectively. The candidate will also be expected to lead graduate students in their cutting edge research and to develop funded research programs that supplement the current department’s competitiveness and create new research thrusts. The capacity to perform inter-disciplinary research, both within (1) environmental engineering, or (2) construction IT and robotics, and in collaboration with other organizations, is highly desirable. The candidate who can conduct inter-disciplinary research projects related with (1) water and climate change, or (2) construction robotics, will be given a preference.
The candidate must have an earned Ph.D. degree in (1) environmental engineering or (2) robotics, or related disciplines at the time of appointment.
KAIST is the most pre-eminent research university in Korea emphasized in science and engineering. KAIST was established in 1971 as the nation’s first graduate school specialized in science and engineering education and research. KAIST has provided a framework and infrastructure in various R&D areas, emphasized on fundamental science and application engineering not only in Korea but also to world-wide.
KAIST Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) Department established in 1982 has been the number one for the last two decades in Korea and currently has world-class level of publication. Further, the department has a vision to continue to grow and become a top-tier CEE department in the world in the near future. The department currently has 30 faculty members including 20 full-time tenure track professors in five divisions: structural engineering and materials, environmental engineering and sustainability, geotechnical engineering and geosystems, urban and architectural planning and design, and IT for construction engineering. All tenure-track faculty members will be evaluated under a western-style eight year tenure system, which helps to maintain the high quality of research and education and prepare for global competition.
Applicants must apply for the faculty position at KAIST CEE Department. The application package should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and statements of research and teaching interests. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. The recent appointments are anticipated for March 2019.
