CEE Students Win Awards at STAI–AWS 2025 Hackathon

Students from KAIST’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering won top awards at the Sustainable Transition with AI (STAI) 2025 Hackathon, held under the theme “AI for Climate Action.” The event brought together students from KAIST’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, KAIST’s Graduate School of Green Growth and Sustainability, Cheju Halla University’s Department of Artificial Intelligence, and Yonsei University’s Department of Computer Science. Participants collaborated to design and implement AI-driven solutions for urgent climate challenges.
The STAI-tuned team, consisting of master’s student Youngjoo Lee and undergraduate Heewon Ahn, won the Grand Prize for their proposal of a climate finance tracking system that integrates satellite imagery and blockchain technology.
The Deepsea-K team, consisting of master’s student Beomseo Kim and undergraduate Seongsoo Yang, won the Second Prize for developing an NFT-based early-intervention financing model.
The Water Navigator team, consisting of master’s students Heeyeon Kim and Nahyung Kang, won the AWS Special Award for creating an AI-powered tool to identify optimal well locations.

2025 Battery Fire Safety Drill Conducted

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering successfully conducted the "2025 Research Laboratory Battery Fire Response Drill" as outlined below.

Participants: CEE (Civil & Environmental Engineering) students and faculty/staff
Training Content:
① In the event of a fire alarm, all personnel must evacuate to the designated assembly area (W15 parking lot)
② 2025 Research Laboratory Battery Fire Emergency Response Drill was successfully conducted.

The 2025 CEE Global Summer Camp

The 2025 CEE Global Summer Camp was held in Bangkok, Thailand from Monday, August 4 to Saturday, August 9.
This camp was organized in collaboration with Chulalongkorn University and attended by 26 undergraduate students (including 1 exchange student), 5 TAs, and 6 professors including Professor Hwa-Soo Yeo, the department head.
Participants learned about Chulalongkorn University’s carbon neutrality policy and were introduced to PMCU’s University x City Coexistence Project.
Following the lectures, students selected research topics in teams and conducted field studies at locations such as Samyan Mitrtown and Siam Square. Each team collaborated with Chulalongkorn students to carry out their projects and presented their findings in front of the professors.
An award ceremony was held to recognize the teams with outstanding presentations.

The lab of Professor Soh Young In from KAIST’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering co-hosted the Sustainable Transition with AI (STAI) 2025 Program alongside the RISE Center of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, Cheju Halla University, and Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Held in Jeju from July 4 to 10, the STAI 2025 program was a collaborative educational initiative jointly organized by KAIST Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Cheju Halla University, and Yonsei University, with support from AWS and Saltlux. The program brought together students from KAIST’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Graduate School of Green Growth and Sustainability, Cheju Halla’s Department of Artificial Intelligence, and Yonsei’s Department of Computer Science.
Under the theme “AI for Climate Action,” participants explored how artificial intelligence and climate technologies can support sustainable infrastructure.
Through lectures, cloud-based workshops, mentoring, and a hackathon, students developed practical strategies to address critical climate challenges.
