2025 KAIST CEE Global Summer Camp in Bangkok, Thailand

• • It is a hotter summer than ever, but the CEE Global Summer Camp was held again this year. Following Bali in 2023 and Tokyo in 2024, it was held in Bangkok, Thailand on this year, from August 4 (Mon) to August 9 (Sat). This time, it was a special camp held with Chulalongkorn University, so it was an all-time scale with 26 undergraduate students (including one exchange student) and 5 TA, and 6 professors including the head of the department attended the event. For 6 days and 5 nights, we explored the city of Bangkok on our own
    
    
  • Arriving on the first day, we unpacked our luggage at the CU iHouse(University Residence), and we all got together to have Welcome Dinner time. we greeted professors at the University of Chulalongkorn while eating Thai food. After that, we were able to experience the unique urban atmosphere of Thailand by exploring Banthat-Thong Road. On the second day, we took lectures with the students at the University of Chulalongkorn
    
    
  • While listening to lectures from Chulalongkorn professors in various fields such as environment, city, transportation, structure, and geotechnic, we could learn about Bangkok's characteristics, Thailand's intensive research topics and etc. In addition, KAIST professors also gave us lectures, so we were able to be introduced to areas that we did not know well about. It was a long time, but we could enjoy listening thanks to the fun hosting of the students of Chulalongkorn. After the lecture, a gift exchange ceremony was held between the two schools, laying the foundation for active collaboration in the future. In the evening, we were introduced to the teams assigned to S, U, R, E, and greeted the students of the same team
    
    
  • In the morning of the third day, we learned about the carbon neutrality policy within the University of Chulalongkorn, and were introduced to PMCU's university X city win-win project. After the lecture, a team gathered for lunch to decide on the subject of the study and explore the places we introduced in the morning (Samyan Mitrtown, Siam square, etc.). After the trip, each team went around several places that are related to the topic autonomously and conducted the Term Project until the fourth day. It was even better to be able to autonomously decide where students want to see, not the program that was set.
    
    
  • On the long-awaited fifth day, we presented the project we had been working on for two days in front of Chulalongkorn students and professors. The students of KAIST and Chulalongkorn in each team explained their projects well, but according to the evaluation of the professors, Team R won the first prize. Through this project, it was meaningful to get to know about the city of Bangkok in depth, and most of all, to get to know the students of Chulalongkorn. After that, students freely toured temples and other places or shopped for souvenirs at shopping malls. Some students even had dinner with Chulalongkorn students.
    
    
  • After a fiery Friday, we flew back to Korea early on Saturday morning. This camp was beneficial to all students. It was an opportunity for the lower grades of the undergraduate department to be introduced to various fields of civil engineering, and the upper grades were able to broaden their insights into areas of interest. In particular, we think that we could achieve a lot academically because it was held with a local university. we would like to thank the professors of our department and the members of the Chulalongkorn university who worked hard to provide us with this opportunity. And despite having a lot of autonomous schedules, TAs took care of us, so we were able to enjoy the trip without any problems. Thank you all. I hope these opportunities will continue to be provided to undergraduate students, and I will also work hard to help them enjoy the opportunities I have received.   • 여느때보다 뜨거운 여름이지만 올해도 CEE Global Summer Camp는 열렸습니다. 2023년 발리, 2024년 도쿄에 이어서 올해는 태국 방콕으로 떠났고, 8/4(월) ~ 8/9(토)까지 진행되었습니다. 이번에는 출라롱꼰 대학과 함께 여는 특별한 캠프인만큼 학부생 26명(교환학생 1명 포함), TA 5명이나 되는 역대급 규모였고, 교수님들도 학과장님을 포함하여 여섯 분이나 참석해주셨습니다. 5박 6일동안 학생 자율적으로 알차게 방콕이라는 도시를 탐방하였습니다.
    
    
  • 첫째날 도착하여 쭐라롱꼰 대학 기숙사(CU iHouse)에 짐을 풀고, 모두 모여 Welcome Dinner 시간을 가졌습니다. 태국 음식을 먹으며 쭐라롱꼰 대학 교수님들과 인사를 나눴습니다. 그 이후에는 자율적으로 Banthat Thong Road를 탐방하며 태국 고유의 도시 분위기를 체험할 수 있었습니다.
    
    
  • 둘째 날은 쭐라롱꼰 대학교 강의실에서 쭐라롱꼰 학생들과 강의를 들었습니다. 환경, 도시, 교통, 구조, 지반 등 다양한 분야의 교수님들의 강의를 들으면서 방콕만의 특징, 태국의 집중 연구 주제 등에 대해서 알 수 있었습니다. 뿐만 아니라 KAIST 교수님들께서도 강의를 해주셔서 잘 몰랐던 분야에 대해서 소개를 받을 수 있었습니다. 긴 시간이었지만 쭐라롱꼰 학생들의 재밌는 진행 덕분에 즐겁게 들을 수 있었습니다. 강의 이후에 두 학교 간 선물 교환식을 진행하며 앞으로의 활발한 교류를 위한 초석을 다졌습니다. 그리고 저녁에는 S,U,R,E로 배정된 팀을 소개받고, 같은 팀으로 배정된 쭐라롱꼰 학생들과 인사를 나눴습니다.
    
    
  • 셋째날 오전에는 쭐라롱꼰 대학 내 탄소중립 정책에 대해 알아보고, PMCU의 대학X도시 상생 프로젝트에 대해 소개받았습니다. 강의 이후 팀끼리 모여 점심을 먹으며 탐구 주제를 정하고 오전에 소개한 장소들(Samyan mitrtown, Siam square 등)을 답사하였습니다. 답사 이후 각 팀은 자율적으로 주제에 맞는 장소 여러 곳을 돌아다니며 넷째 날까지 Term Project를 진행하였습니다. 정해진 프로그램이 아닌 학생들이 보고 싶은 곳을 자율적으로 정해 갈 수 있어서 더 좋았습니다.
    
    
  • 대망의 다섯째 날, 이틀동안 진행한 프로젝트를 쭐라 학생들과 교수님들 앞에서 발표하였습니다. 각 팀의 KAIST, 쭐라롱꼰 학생들 모두 자신들의 프로젝트에 대해 잘 설명하였으나 교수님들의 평가에 따라 1등은 R팀이 받게되었습니다. 이번 프로젝트를 통해 방콕이라는 도시에 대해 깊이 있게 알 수 있었고, 무엇보다 쭐라롱꼰 학생들과 친해질 수 있어 뜻깊었습니다. 이후에는 사원등을 자유롭게 관광하거나 쇼핑몰에서 기념품을 쇼핑하였습니다. 일부 학생들은 쭐라롱꼰 학생들과 저녁을 함께 먹기도 했습니다.
    
    
  • 불타는 금요일을 보내고 토요일 새벽에 귀국 비행기를 타고 한국으로 돌아왔습니다. 이번 캠프는 모든 학생들에게 유익했습니다. 학부 저학년들에게는 토목공학의 다양한 분야를 소개받는 기회가 되었고, 고학년들은 관심 분야에 대한 식견을 넓힐 수 있었습니다.
    
    
  • 특히, 현지 대학과 협업하였기에 학문적으로 성취할 수 있었던 것이 많았던 것 같습니다. 이런 기회를 제공해주시기 위해 노력해주신 저희 학과 교수님, 쭐라롱꼰 대학 구성원 분들께 감사의 말씀을 드립니다. 그리고 자율 일정이 많았음에도 불구하고 TA들께서 신경써주셔서 덕분에 다행히 큰일없이 모두 즐겁게 다녀올 수 있었습니다. 모두 감사드립니다. 앞으로도 이런 기회가 학부생들에게 제공되었으면 좋겠고, 제가 받은 기회를 후배들도 누릴 수 있도록 저 또한 노력하겠습니다. 다시 한 번 감사드립니다.
