2024 NSF IRES US-Korea Summer Program Achievement

The NSF IRES US-Korea Summer Program(June 24, 2024 – July 11, 2024), hosted by Professor Kunhee Choi from Texas A&M University and Professor Hwasoo Yeo from KAIST, has achieved significant success. Ten students from across the U.S. and our department's graduate students formed teams to conduct research on AI and simulation at KAIST over the course of three weeks, resulting in the creation of several research papers. These papers were submitted to the upcoming TRB Annual Meeting 2025, the largest conference in the field of transportation. Of the four submitted papers, three have been accepted for presentation, and three of them are considered for publication.

Prof. Kim, Dong-Soo

On October 17, 2024, at the Jeju International Convention Center (Jeju ICC), the late Professor Kim Dong-Soo was posthumously granted in the academic category of the Songsan Civil Engineering Culture Award.
The Songsan Civil Engineering Culture Award is the most prestigious award in the Civil engineering community, established through a fund donated by the late Songsan Kim Hyung-joo. It honors persons who have significantly contributed to the advancement of civil engineering technology, as well as to media and culture.
Professor Kim, who passed away in 2020, served at KAIST for over 25 years. During a time when public interest in earthquakes was minimal, he devoted significant efforts to enhance Korea’s seismic design standards. He criticized the problems of directly adopting foreign standards without considering domestic conditions and led the development of a ground classification system and amplification factors that reflect domestic soil conditions, leading the creation of the national seismic design code.
Even while battling illness, Professor Kim continued to research towards the advancement of Korea's seismic design codes. After the 2017 Pohang earthquake, which caused first notable liquefaction in Korea, he united geotechnical researchers to analyze the hazard and to update domestic liquefaction standards. He continued his research until he passed away.
As a geotechnical engineer, his contributions to society, his warm personality, and his leadership have greatly inspired many geotechnical engineers and left a substantial legacy to his colleagues and students. In recognition of these achievements, he was awarded the Songsan Culture Award.

KAIST and USST Discuss Strengthening Research

On February 19th, Professors Jing Zhao and Wenzhe Sun from the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST) visited the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at KAIST to discuss research collaboration opportunities with Prof. Yeo, Hwasoo and his research team.
During the seminar held that morning, discussions were held regarding ways to enhance academic and research exchanges between KAIST and USST.
Key topics included: ▲ the operation of a Dual Degree program, ▲ research exchange for graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, and ▲ the establishment of Collaboration Lectures. Notably, Collaboration Lectures will be conducted jointly by faculty members from both institutions, utilizing both online and offline formats.
Additionally, discussions took place on conducting joint research through the sharing of Electric Vehicle (EV) data. Through this collaboration, both institutions plan to jointly conduct research on traffic data analysis and applications based on electric vehicles, and to present their research outcomes together in the future.
It is anticipated that this visit will further strengthen research collaboration between KAIST and USST, and that sustained exchanges will contribute to the enhancement of the global research network.
